people were killed and 50 others injured as landslides and storms, triggered by the cyclonic storm `Roanu`, hit the country’s coastal districts on Saturday.
Of the dead, four were reported from Chittagong while three from Noakhali, two from Bhola, and one each from Patuakhali and Laxmipur districts.
Besides, four people went missing as two sand-laden cargoes sank in the Meghna River in Ilisha of Bhola’s Sadar upazila during the heavy rains in the morning, said Khairul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
Several hundred houses, business establishments and shops were damaged while many trees and electric poles uprooted, ponds and fish enclosures washed away and several thousands people have been marooned due to flood triggered by the storms in different coastal districts.
According to the latest Met Office bulletin, cyclonic storm Roanu made a landfall on Barisal-Chittagong coast near Chittagong on Saturday noon and may complete the crossing in 4-5 hours.
Under the influence of the cyclonic storm, gusty/squally wind is continuing over the coastal areas of Bangladesh.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the cyclone centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts/squalls. The sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre.
The maritime ports of Chittagong, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted danger signal number seven (r) seven.
